How to Use AI for Customer Research and Buyer Personas
Before you build or write anything, use AI to map your buyer — their pains, objections, and language — with prompts that produce usable research instead of fluff.
You can't sell to someone you don't understand. Most solopreneurs skip customer research because it feels slow and academic — so they build and write based on guesses. AI fixes the speed problem: it turns hours of persona work into minutes. One caveat up front, then the prompts.
1. Build the buyer profile
Start broad, then make it specific enough to write to.
Act as a customer researcher. My product is [product] for [rough audience]. Build a detailed buyer profile: their role and situation, the problem they'd hire my product to solve, what they've already tried, their biggest fear, and what "success" looks like to them. Be specific — invent a realistic individual, not a demographic.
2. Map the pains and the language
You want the words your buyer actually uses, because that's the copy that converts.
List the top 5 pains this buyer feels about [problem area], ranked by intensity. For each, give the exact phrase they'd use to describe it to a friend (not marketing language), and the cost of leaving it unsolved.
3. Surface the objections before they do
Every sale dies on an unhandled objection. Find them first.
Act as my most skeptical prospect. Give me the 7 objections you'd raise before buying [offer] at [price] — including the ones you wouldn't say out loud. For each, the real fear underneath it and the one thing that would overcome it.
4. Find where they actually are
Research is useless if you can't reach them.
Where does this buyer spend time online and offline? List the specific communities, creators, newsletters, and search terms they follow, and the kind of content that earns their trust in each place. Prioritize places I can reach for free.
5. Pressure-test your idea against the research
Now close the loop.
Based on everything above, is my offer ([offer]) actually aligned with this buyer's top pains? Where's the mismatch? Suggest 3 ways to reposition the offer so it maps more directly to what they already want.
Then go talk to five real people
The AI gives you a sharp hypothesis in ten minutes. Five short conversations confirm or kill it. That combination — fast synthetic research plus a little real-world validation — beats both guessing and spending a month on surveys.
